Ingredients To Avoid In Your Hair Products

When it comes to hair products, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, to choose from. With so many products on the market how do you choose a product that is good for your hair while still leaving it clean and refreshed? The answer sometimes isn’t simple. It’s very hard to know what product to use when every single product throws out claims saying that it promotes healthy hair growth and so many other things. Instead of looking for a product that claims to be healthy, take a look at the ingredients within hair products and decide for yourself. Educating yourself about what is actually in your hair products can help make you feel confident and secure when choosing a product that actually is good for you!

In this blog post, we will be discussing some of the different ingredients that tend to be in many hair products that are actually very harmful to your hair. Keep reading to learn more!

Sulfates

More and more people are realizing and talking about how terrible sulfates are for your hair. You’ve probably seen the claim “sulfate free” on many hair products, which is great, but do you know why they’re so bad? Sulfates are an ingredient that are commonly found in shampoos due to their foaming lather that they give. We’ve been conditioned by commercials that if our shampoo doesn’t give us that thick foam lather, our hair isn’t getting cleaned. Sulfates can come in a couple of different forms. You may see sulfates listed as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These sulfates can leave your skin feeling dry and irritated and may even result in rashes. They also strip your hair of the essential oils and proteins that they need in order to stay healthy and promote hair growth.

Parabens

Parabens are also a very popular ingredient that you’ve probably seen listed. Many times hair companies will combine parabens and sulfates together by advertising them as “sulfate and paraben free”. Unlike sulfates, parabens are found both in shampoos and conditioners. Parabens include chemicals like methylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben, which have all been linked to breast cancer. Parabens can cause irritation of the skin and affect your hormone balance, which can be directly linked to hair loss.

Silicones

Silicones are commonly found in both shampoos and conditioners. They create the illusion of healthy hair by coating the base of the hair in silicone to give it that smooth and shiny look. However, that coating can also end up coating your scalp, which can lead to the clogging of pores. It can also lead to your hair being dried out. Silicones can also be found in products that are heat protectants. These are fine to use, as long as you’re using them at the base of your hair and not near your scalp.

Polyethylene Glycol

Polyethylene Glycol or PEG is an ingredient that is found in shampoos and is used as a thickening agent. It strips your hair of its natural moisture and can lead to immense hair breakage.

Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol can be found in many hair products. Alcohol strips the hair of its natural oils and causes damage to your hair. All alcohol should be avoided and you should steer clear of shampoos, conditioners, or other products that have alcohol listed as an ingredient.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an additive ingredient that is added to reduce and prevent bacteria contamination within the product. Many companies add this ingredient as a sanitary need since hair bottles are often left open and are so frequently exposed to humid and moist temperatures, where bacteria love to grow. However, it can be a strong skin irritant and a suspected carcinogen.

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are unfortunately added into many products. While this chemical is a known carcinogen, it still seems to make its way into our hair products. This may be due to the amount that is in a product but even a little bit can still be considered to be toxic.

Synthetic Colors and Fragrances

These are another thing that you’ll want to watch out for. Many times people tend to have sensitivities or allergic reactions to the synthetic dyes and fragrances that are often put into hair products. This can cause irritation to the scalp which can lead to flaking and uncomfortable dryness.

It’s important to remember that everything that you put onto your body gets absorbed through the skin and goes into your bloodstream. So, it’s incredibly important that you understand the ingredients that are in your everyday products. Knowledge is power, and the more you have, the more you can protect your hair and your body.
