Do I Have Healthy Hair?

If you are losing your hair, you may be wondering if you have healthy hair, but just can’t keep it around. No matter your hair thickness or type, healthy hair is marked by several factors:

  • Natural shine
  • Equal hair shed and growth
  • Doesn’t easily tangle
  • Stands up to moisture — retains little water
  • No dandruff

Why Am I Losing My Hair?

Everyone sheds hair. A healthy scalp will shed hair and be in the process of growing hair to replace that which was lost. However, if you seem to be shedding more hair than normal without hair to replace it, then you may have room for concern. There are a lot of reasons why you might be losing our hair including:

  • Physical stress
  • Too much vitamin A
  • Not eating enough protein
  • Hormone changes
  • Anemia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Alopecia areata

Hair Density

Hair density refers to how much hair you have on your head or how close together they are. Do not confuse this with texture which describes the thickness of each strand of hair. On average, a person will have 2,000 hairs per square inch. Those that have less than 2,000 strands per inch have low-density hair and those that exceed it, have high-density hair. An easy way to know your own hair density is this:

  • Low density – you can see your scalp when your hair is laying naturally against your scalp
  • Medium density – you can see some of your scalp, but it isn’t prominent
  • High density– you can’t see your scalp at all when it lays naturally

Knowing the density of your hair allows you to choose the best products for your hair to not only keep it healthy, but also for easy styling.
